What F9 means
On LG electric and gas ranges and wall-oven-style cooking appliances with a numeric F-code display, F9 means the upper oven is not heating properly. The control has seen that the upper cavity is not behaving the way it should during heating, so it shows F9 and may stop the cycle. The owner usually finds the oven cooler than set, slow to preheat, or switched off with the code on the display.
Common causes of F9
- Upper oven temperature sensor reading against what the control expects
- Bake and broil heating elements, or the igniter on a gas model
- Relay and wiring that feed the upper oven heat
1. Press CLEAR/OFF, wait a moment, and run the upper oven again. 2. If F9 returns, switch the range's circuit breaker off for 30 seconds, then back on. 3. Make sure the oven door closes fully and nothing blocks the oven vent. 4. If you smell gas at any point, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside. 5. If the code comes back, stop using the upper oven and book service.
- The code says the upper oven is struggling to heat, but a reset does not show whether a sensor, a heat source, or a relay is responsible.
- We check each in order and give you a written price before any work begins.
- Repairs carry a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Other Range codes
Does F9 mean the whole range is dead?
Not usually. F9 is tied to the upper oven, so the cooktop and other cavities may still work. We still suggest testing before relying on any oven that reported a heating problem.
Why does the oven feel cool when F9 is showing?
The control stops or limits heating when it decides the upper oven is not heating properly. That can leave the cavity cooler than the set temperature, so food undercooks until the cause is found.
Is F9 a gas safety issue on a gas range?
F9 itself is a heating-performance code. A gas smell is a separate emergency: leave the house and call the gas utility from outside. If there is no smell, we can inspect the ignition and heating parts safely.
Still seeing F9?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
