LG Wall Oven Cooling Fan Keeps Running After Shutoff: Normal or Not

A fan that hums after you turn the oven off is usually cooling the cabinet. It is normal when it stops by itself, and worth a look when it never does.

Wall ovens have a cooling fan that protects the controls and the cabinet around the oven. After a long bake or a self-clean, the fan keeps running until the temperature inside falls to a safe level. That is by design.

How long is reasonable

There is no single number, because the time depends on how hot the oven was and how warm the kitchen is. In a Houston summer kitchen the fan may run longer. The useful test is whether it stops on its own and whether the oven cools.

Signs it is working normally

  • The fan stops after the oven has cooled and the door is closed.
  • You hear a steady whoosh, not a rattle.
  • The display shows the oven off and the cavity is dropping in temperature.

Signs worth noting

  • The fan runs for hours after a short low-temperature bake.
  • It runs while the oven is cold and off.
  • It squeals, scrapes or rattles.
  • The cabinet or the glass above gets unusually hot.
  • The fan stops entirely while the oven is on. That can let heat build around the controls.

What to check yourself

  1. Open the oven door a few inches to help it cool and see whether the fan stops.
  2. Make sure vents around the oven are not blocked by trays or towels.
  3. Turn the oven off at the control and check for a lock or timer still active.

A fan that never stops can come from a sensor reporting heat, a relay or the fan itself. A fan that fails to start is more serious, because the oven can overheat its surroundings, so stop using the oven until it is checked.
