A refrigerator makes more noise than most people notice until a quiet house at night. An LG inverter refrigerator can change its speed through the day, so the sound can rise and fall. That alone is not a problem.
Everyday sounds
- A soft hum or whoosh that changes pitch as the compressor or fans speed up and slow down.
- A click as a cycle starts or stops.
- Gurgling or a hiss as refrigerant moves.
- Cracks or pops when the cabinet contracts or the ice maker releases ice.
- A trickle during and after defrost.
Sounds worth checking
- Rattling. A loose tray, a bottle against the back wall or a refrigerator that is not level.
- Loud buzzing. Something touching the cabinet, or a fan hitting ice or debris.
- Squeal or chirp that repeats. Often a fan motor that is wearing.
- Running constantly and loud. Dirt on the condenser area, a door not sealing or a warm room.
What to do before booking
Shift bottles and boxes off the back wall and the shelves, check the leveling feet and listen again. Slide the unit forward only when that is safe, then vacuum the grille at the bottom or back if your manual shows one. Find the loudest spot, such as the freezer back panel, the bottom rear or the door, and note it.
The noise alone cannot tell us whether a fan, the compressor or a loose panel is making it. A buzz inside the freezer, for instance, can be a fan against frost, which then calls for a look at the defrost system. We trace the sound before we recommend a part.
Our refrigerator repair page lists what we handle, and the service area shows whether we reach you. Visits are three-hour windows; the quote comes in writing first, and the labor is warranted for 30 days.
