What H5 means
On LG induction and radiant cooktops, and ranges with a cooktop section, the hot surface indicator may read H5 or HS depending on the display. It is not an error code. It lights while the cooktop glass is warmer than about 150 degrees Fahrenheit, as a reminder that the surface is too hot to touch, even after you turn the burner off. The indicator should go out by itself once the surface cools. It only becomes a repair question if it stays lit when the cooktop has been cool for a long while.
Common causes of H5
- Hot surface sensing that has not released after cooling
- Control reading that stays stuck
- Real residual heat from a recent cook or a nearby oven
1. Keep hands and cloths off the glass while the indicator is lit. 2. Wait until the surface has cooled to room temperature. 3. If H5 or HS is still on, switch the circuit breaker off for 30 seconds and back on. 4. Check again after the cooktop has had time to settle. 5. If it stays lit on a cool surface, schedule a visit.
- The question is whether the surface is really warm or the control only thinks so, and we measure the surface to find out.
- We check the sensing circuit that releases the indicator.
- We confirm the light goes out on a cold cooktop before we leave.
Other Cooktop codes
Is H5 something I need to fix?
Not while the glass is warm. It is a safety reminder, not a failure. It only needs attention if the indicator stays on after the cooktop is fully cool.
Why does my display say HS instead of H5?
Both appear for the same hot surface indicator. Different displays show the characters differently, but the meaning is the same: the glass is still hot enough to burn.
How long should the indicator stay on?
It stays on as long as the surface is warm, which can be a while after a long cook. Once the glass cools to room temperature the indicator should turn off on its own.
Still unsure about H5?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
