What F3 means
On LG microwave ovens, which LG also calls lightwave ovens, F3 can appear when foreign substances sit around the touch button panel. Spills, grease, or moisture on the panel can make the buttons read as pressed, and the oven shows F-3 and stops responding. Other numbered F errors on these ovens relate to defective parts, a short circuit, a communication failure, or overcurrent, so F3 is the gentlest of that group.
Common causes of F3
- Grease, moisture, or residue on the touch panel
- A button that reads as held down
- A control or panel connection that is not communicating
- A damaged touch panel
1. Unplug the microwave and wipe the touch button panel with a dry or barely damp soft cloth. 2. Dry the panel completely, then plug the microwave back in. 3. See whether F3 returns. If it does, stop using the oven. 4. Do not spray cleaner directly onto the panel, because moisture can run behind it.
- If F3 comes back on a clean, dry panel, the panel or its connection needs testing.
- The code alone does not say whether the panel or the control board is responsible, so we check the panel first.
Other Microwave codes
Why does my LG microwave show F3?
F3 can occur when foreign matter is around the touch button panel. Cleaning and drying the panel is the first step. Keep liquid from running behind the panel while you clean.
Can I just unplug and replug it?
Yes. Unplug it, wipe the panel, plug it back in, and see whether F3 returns. If the same error comes back, the oven needs a look. A short wait with the plug out gives the control time to reset.
Is this the same as F3 on an LG range?
The characters are the same, but the appliance is different. A range F3 refers to its own touch pad sensor and is handled separately. Ranges use a separate entry for their own touch pad.
Still unsure about F3?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
