An LG over-the-range microwave is half oven and half hood: besides heating food it pulls cooking smoke and steam away from the range below. The second job depends on filters and a vent path that most owners never clean.
Monthly care
- Remove the metal grease filters, usually on the underside, by sliding the latch as shown in your manual.
- Let them soak in hot soapy water, work over them with a soft brush and leave them dry fully before putting them back.
- Wipe the underside of the microwave and the fan opening with a damp cloth.
- Wash the interior and the door seal edges with a mild cleaner.
Venting choices
The microwave can vent outside or recirculate through a charcoal filter back into the room. If your unit recirculates, the charcoal filter is not washable and needs replacing on the schedule in your manual. Check that outside vent flaps open freely and are not stuck with grease.
Light and fan
If the lights under the microwave are dim, replace them with the type your manual lists. If the fan is weak or slow, grease on the blades or a clogged filter is the first suspect, though a worn motor is possible. Turn the fan on with the filters out for a moment: if it runs well, the filters were the problem.
Limits
Cleaning does not fix a fan that makes noise, a light socket that sparks or a display that fails. Do not run the microwave empty, and leave the small panel inside the cavity alone. If you smell something burning, stop and unplug the unit.
