What AI, A1 means
LG air conditioners that show CH codes, from window and portable units to wall-mounted split models, display AI or A1 while the artificial intelligence, or auto, function is active. This is a status message and not an error. With auto control running, the unit decides its own cooling behavior, so the temperature and airflow buttons may not respond the way they do in normal mode. Owners often assume the remote or the buttons stopped working, when the unit is simply managing the room by itself.
Common causes of AI, A1
- Auto or AI mode selected from the remote or the panel
- Buttons overridden by the auto routine rather than by a problem
1. Press the mode button on the remote or the unit. 2. Select Normal Cooling mode. 3. Set the temperature and fan speed again and watch that the display no longer shows AI or A1. 4. If you prefer auto control, leave it as is and let the unit run.
- If the buttons still ignore you in Normal Cooling mode, we test the remote and the button panel input.
- If the unit returns to AI by itself, we check the control board settings and the mode memory.
- We explain what we find and quote the work in writing first.

Why won't my temperature buttons work with AI on the screen?
Auto mode takes over the cooling decisions, so manual temperature and airflow changes may be ignored. Switch to Normal Cooling mode and the buttons control the unit again as you would expect.
Is A1 different from AI?
On these units both characters mean the auto function is active. Which one you see depends on the display style of your model, and neither one points to a failed part.
Will the unit cool properly in auto mode?
Yes, auto mode still cools the room. It simply chooses its own settings, so if you want a specific temperature or fan speed, return to Normal Cooling mode first.
Still unsure about AI, A1?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
