What FF, u51 means

FF means Freeze Failure on LG front-load washers with an alphanumeric display, including the WashTower washer half and WashCombo. The internal temperature fell below about 1 C, hoses froze, and the controls stay disabled until it rises above 4 C. On LG top-load washers with an alphanumeric display, a frozen hose or tap is suspected. The u51 label appears in the list header with FF.

✓ One safe check you can try

1. Thaw the tub and drain hose with warm water, 50 to 60 C. 2. Thaw the inlet hoses and taps. 3. Bring the washer into a warmer space if you can. 4. Restart once everything is thawed. 5. Request service if it occurs in warm weather.

! Why to stop there

If FF shows in warm weather, freezing is not the explanation and we have to look at the temperature sensing.

Can FF appear in a warm house?

It can if part of the washer sits in a cold spot, such as a garage. If it appears in warm weather, we look at something other than freezing. Garages, porches and unheated closets are the usual places, and a cold night can freeze a hose.

What is u51?

LG lists it with FF in the header of its code list. Its text describes FF only, so treat u51 as the same freeze-related display. Use warm water, not boiling water, and do not use tools to force a frozen hose.

When will the controls work again?

On front-load washers the controls are disabled until the internal temperature is back above 4 C. Thawing the washer is the first step. Warm weather points elsewhere, so we test the temperature sensing and quote the repair in writing.
