LG Washer Door Will Not Open After the Cycle: Why Not to Force It

A locked LG washer door after the cycle is usually the safety lock doing its job. Forcing it risks a flood or a broken latch, so here is what to try instead.

An LG front-load washer locks its door during a cycle and releases it only when the machine decides it is safe. If the door will not open after the cycle ends, the lock may simply need a minute or the tub may still hold water. Pulling hard on the handle is the one thing not to do.

What to try, in order

  1. Wait a few minutes after the cycle ends; the lock can take a moment to release.
  2. Look at the display. If it shows a drain or lock message, the cycle is not finished.
  3. Check whether Child Lock is on and turn it off using the control shown in your manual.
  4. Press the power button off, wait a minute, then turn it back on and try the door.
  5. If water is visible through the glass, run a drain or spin cycle first.

Why force is a bad idea

If the tub still holds water, opening the door sends it across the floor. A forced handle can also crack the latch or the door frame, turning a small problem into a part replacement. Water on a hardwood or laminate floor in a humid house spreads quickly.

What the sign alone does not say

A door that stays locked can mean the drain is blocked, the lock switch has stopped releasing, or the control is not receiving the end-of-cycle signal. You cannot tell those apart from the front of the machine. Standing water suggests a drain issue. A dry tub with a locked door suggests the lock.

If you must retrieve something urgent, unplug the washer and check your manual for an emergency release at the drain filter area, and use it only when the tub is empty of water. Have towels ready before you try anything.

For a door that stays locked, see the washer repair page and reserve a three-hour window from the service area list. We write the price before starting and warrant labor for 30 days.

Tell us the model and the code. We will bring the part.
