What CH E / Er CH means
CH E, E CH, or Er CH appears on LG refrigerators with an LED or LCD temperature display. The older description is a refrigerant leak on the high side, at the condenser. A newer description says insufficient cooling or an abnormal internal temperature, from low refrigerant, a leak, a compressor or valve problem, a blockage, or doors left open. The code can also show after a repair until the freezer cools below 14 F, which takes about 24 hours.
Common causes of CH E / Er CH
- Doors left open or not sealing
- Insufficient refrigerant or a leak on the high side
- Compressor, valve, or blockage in the cooling circuit
1. Close both doors fully and make sure nothing holds them open. 2. Unplug the refrigerator for 5 minutes, then restart it. 3. If it was just repaired, allow 24 hours for the freezer to cool below 14 F. 4. Keep doors closed and move perishables to a cooler if warming. 5. If CH E remains, request service.
- Only a sealed-system inspection shows whether there is a leak, a weak compressor, or a blockage.
- We explain what we find before any work and give a written price first.
- We check the doors first, because a door left open can cause this code too.
Other Refrigerator codes
Does CH E always mean a leak?
No. The newer description also lists doors left open, a compressor or valve problem, or a blockage. We check the simple causes first and test cooling before concluding anything.
The fridge was just repaired. Why CH E?
The code can appear after a repair until the freezer cools below 14 F, which can take about 24 hours. If it is still showing after that, call us.
Is CH E an emergency?
Cooling may be reduced, so food can spoil if it persists. Keep doors shut and move perishables to a cooler if temperatures rise, then schedule an inspection.
