What AE, EI, FE means
On LG dishwashers, AE, FE and sometimes EI mean the machine has found leakage or overfilling. That can be too much water supplied, heavy suds from dishwashing liquid, a unit that is not level or a door that is not aligned, a leak detected in the base, or water poured into the Heat Dry blower. The dishwasher keeps draining to protect your floor and stops the cycle. Codes can differ by model, and you may see AE written as RE on some displays, so read the characters carefully.
Common causes of AE, EI, FE
- Suds from the wrong detergent
- Unit not level or door out of alignment
- Water in the base or a leak that trips the leak sensor
- Inlet valve that lets in too much water
- Water poured into the Heat Dry blower
1. Let the dishwasher finish draining, then open the door. 2. Use proper dishwasher detergent only, never dish soap. 3. Load large plates upside down so they do not trap water. 4. Do not pour water into the Heat Dry blower. 5. If nothing is leaking and the code still shows, unplug the dishwasher and call us.
- Suds, level and alignment are easy to rule out, and a code that stays after that points to the leak sensor or the inlet valve.
- We look for any wet spot under and around the unit before we run it.
- We run a full cycle and watch the fill level before we finish.
Other Dishwasher codes
Is AE the same as FE?
They share a meaning on LG dishwashers: leakage or overfilling. Some displays write the same condition a little differently, so go by the characters you see and tell us exactly what the panel shows.
Why does the dishwasher keep draining?
That is a protection step. When the control sees too much water or a leak, it drains to keep water off your floor. It will not run a normal cycle until the cause is dealt with.
Can soap cause this code?
Yes. Dish soap makes far too many suds, and heavy suds can look like overfilling. Use only detergent made for dishwashers, and if the code appears with no suds and no leak, we should test the sensors.

A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
