What dE, dE4 means

On LG dryers, dE or dE4 means the door is not completely closed. Clothing can be stuck in the opening, the lint filter may not be fully in, or the door may be misaligned. The dryer will not start or will stop when the control senses the door is open, as a safety step. Most causes are simple to check from the front, so start there before thinking about a repair.

Common causes of dE, dE4

  • Clothing caught in the door opening
  • Lint filter not fully seated
  • Door misaligned or latch not catching
  • Door switch
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Open the door and look for clothing caught in the opening. 2. Push the lint filter all the way in. 3. Unplug the dryer for 5 seconds, then plug it back in. 4. Close the door firmly. 5. If dE or dE4 repeats, call us.

! Why to stop there
  • If the door looks right and the code stays, the door switch or the latch may not be registering.
  • We check the latch, the strike and the switch.
  • We run a cycle and confirm the dryer stays running with the door closed before we finish.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
dE, dE4dE, dE4 questions
Why does my dryer say the door is open when it is closed?

A bit of clothing or a filter that is not fully in can keep the door from closing all the way. If neither is the case, the latch or the switch may not be registering.

What is the 5 second unplug for?

It resets the control so it can read the door again. Do it after you clear the opening, then close the door firmly. It takes only 5 seconds, and it works best when you have already cleared the opening and pushed the filter in.

Are dE and dE4 different?

They mean the same thing on LG dryers: the door is not seen as closed. Tell us which one you see if you call. If the code returns after you clear the opening and close the door firmly, we check the latch and door switch.
