What LE1 means
On LG electric, gas, heat-pump, and steam dryers, LE1 means the drum is not rotating because of an issue with the drum motor. You may hear a hum, or hear nothing, while the drum stays still, and the cycle stops with LE1 on the display. A very heavy or tangled load can cause the same stop, which is why the first check is to lighten it.
Common causes of LE1
- An overloaded or tangled load locking the drum
- The drum motor not turning or drawing too much current
- A drum belt or roller that is binding
- A motor start circuit that is not delivering power
1. Unplug the dryer and take out some of the clothes if the load is heavy. 2. Turn the drum by hand to feel for a snag or something stuck. 3. Plug the dryer in and run it again with the smaller load.
- If the drum turns easily by hand but LE1 returns, we check the motor, belt, and start circuit.
- We can tell a heavy-load stop from a failing motor by testing, so you do not replace a part you do not need.
Other Dryer codes
Can an overloaded dryer cause LE1?
Yes. A load that is too heavy can keep the drum from turning. Remove some items and run it again before suspecting the motor. Heavy towels and bedding are the usual culprits.
What if the drum will not turn by hand?
Something may be jammed, such as a sock behind the drum or a seized roller. Do not force it, and call us. Stop the dryer at once if you hear grinding or smell something hot.
Is LE1 the same as the other LE codes?
No. LE1 is the drum motor. LE2 involves the compressor and LE3 the air-circulation motor, so each points to a different place. Telling us the exact code helps us bring the right parts.
