What nP means
On LG electric dryers, nP means no current is detected at the heater. The dryer tumbles but does not heat, because the heater circuit is not getting power. This is normally a problem with the home electrical wiring or the outlet and not the dryer. An electric dryer needs a grounded 240-volt outlet that matches the rating plate, and a missing leg of power produces exactly this result.
Common causes of nP
- A cord that is not fully seated in the outlet
- A dryer breaker that is tripped or weak
- An outlet or house wiring that is not delivering 240 volts
- A heater circuit in the dryer that is open
1. Check that the power cord is pushed firmly into a grounded 240-volt outlet that matches the dryer's rating plate. 2. Switch the dryer's breaker off for 10 seconds, then back on. 3. Have a licensed electrician check the outlet if nP returns, and call us after that.
- If the outlet tests correctly and nP continues, the heater circuit inside the dryer needs testing.
- Home wiring is the usual cause, so we separate a supply problem from a dryer problem before anything is replaced.
Other Dryer codes
Why does the dryer run but not heat?
With nP the heater is not receiving current. The drum motor uses a different circuit, so the dryer can tumble while heat is missing. The cord seating and the breaker are the quick checks first.
Should I call an electrician first?
If the outlet may be the problem, yes. The first tests are the cord seating and the breaker. A licensed electrician can confirm the outlet supplies 240 volts. If the outlet tests fine, the dryer itself is the next thing we test.
Is nP dangerous?
The code itself is not a danger, but do not open the dryer or work on the outlet yourself. Use only a licensed electrician for house wiring. Leave the outlet and the back panel closed.
Still seeing nP?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
