What IF means
On LG electric, gas, heat-pump, and steam dryers, IF means the lint filter is not detected. The filter has an exterior part and an interior part, and both must be assembled correctly. The interior part holds a magnet that the dryer uses to sense the filter. If the parts are separated, or the magnet is gone, the dryer behaves as if no filter is installed and will not run.
Common causes of IF
- The two filter parts not clipped together
- The magnet in the interior filter missing or loose
- A damaged filter holder
- The detection sensor not reading the magnet
1. Take the filter out and separate the exterior and interior parts, then clean both. 2. Put them back together firmly and check that the magnet is still in place. 3. Reinsert the filter. If the magnet or holder is lost, replace the filter.
- If IF remains with an intact, seated filter, the sensor that reads the magnet needs testing.
- A replacement filter that does not match the model can also fail detection, and we check the fit.
Other Dryer codes
Why does IF mention a magnet?
The inner filter has a magnet, and the dryer senses it to know the filter is installed. Without the magnet, the dryer cannot detect the filter.
My filter looks fine. Why IF?
Both parts must be assembled correctly. A part that is slightly out of place may not line up with the sensor, so take it apart and reassemble it.
Can I buy a replacement filter?
Yes, when the magnet or holder is gone, replacing the filter is the fix. Choose one made for your model so the magnet sits where the sensor expects it.
Still unsure about IF?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
