What FF means
FF, also shown as Er FF, E FF, or F, appears on LG refrigerators with an LED or LCD temperature display. It means the freezer fan motor is not turning, usually because of ice or frost around the fan. The owner sees FF, the freezer may run warm, and cooling in the fresh-food section can suffer because the fan moves the cold air. Noise from the freezer back wall is common.
Common causes of FF
- Ice or frost around the freezer fan
- Freezer fan motor and wiring
- Defrost system that should prevent frost
1. Move the food to a cooler and unplug the refrigerator. 2. Leave both doors open at least 24 hours, about 1 day in summer and up to 3 days in winter. 3. Wipe the interior dry and do not use a hair dryer. 4. Plug it in and allow 24 to 48 hours to cool. 5. If FF returns, request service.
- Melting the ice helps, but it does not reveal whether the fan or the defrost system caused the frost.
- We test both and give a written price before any work.
- We also check the door seal.

Can I use a hair dryer to speed things up?
Do not use one. Heat from a hair dryer can damage plastic parts and wiring inside the cabinet, so let the ice melt naturally with the doors open and the unit unplugged.
How long until it cools back down?
After the defrost and plug-in, allow another 24 to 48 hours before judging the result. Check the temperature with a thermometer before putting food back, and keep it in a cooler until then.
What if FF returns a week later?
Then the frost is coming back, so something is making ice or the fan is failing. We find which one, test it, and give you a written price before any repair work begins.
Still seeing FF?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
