What HS means
On LG electric, gas, heat-pump, and steam dryers, HS reports an error with the humidity sensor, the part that tells the dryer how damp the load is. Without a good reading the dryer cannot end an auto-dry cycle, so it falls back to running for about two and a half hours. Clothes may come out overdry or the cycle may seem endless. Residue on the sensor bars is a frequent reason.
Common causes of HS
- Residue or film on the sensor bars under the lint filter
- Sensor bars that were still wet when the cycle started
- A sensor wire or connection that is not reading
- A sensor that no longer responds
1. Unplug the dryer and open the door. 2. Wipe the metal sensor strips below the lint filter with a soft cloth, then let them dry completely. 3. Plug in the dryer and run a short cycle. 4. Skip dryer sheets for a few loads, since softener film is a common coating.
- If HS returns on a clean, dry sensor, we test the sensor and its wiring to see whether the reading is lost or false.
- Fabric softener film can come back quickly, so we also look at what is coating the strips.
Other Dryer codes
Why is my dryer running 2.5 hours with HS?
With a humidity sensor error the dryer cannot tell when clothes are dry, so it uses a fixed long run time as a backup. That is why clothes can come out hotter and drier than expected.
Where is the humidity sensor?
On many LG dryers it is a pair of metal strips under the lint filter inside the drum opening. They can be wiped clean with a soft cloth. Wipe both strips, then let them dry before the next load.
Will cleaning really fix HS?
Often it does, because film from softener sheets blocks the reading. If HS comes back after cleaning and drying, the sensor or its wiring needs testing. Dry strips matter, because damp ones read false.
Still seeing HS?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
